a joyful look at 2011

In just a few short days, we’ll ring in the new year.

The years seem to fly by a lot faster as I get older – so fast that it’s hard for me to remember what happened over the last 12 months.  The years go by fast for me because I often find myself looking towards the future and also getting caught up in my daily routine that I don’t always savor each moment or appreciate the past.

So before we close the chapter on 2011, I’m taking this final opportunity to reflect on my own life and remember my favorite moments of the past year.

Favorite moments:

1. The Royal Wedding – Yes, I’m such a sucker for fairytales and the royal wedding was no exception.  It was a joyful day where the world watched two people in love tie the knot.  In the modern world filled with rampant divorces, war, economic hardship, we were able to stop and watch two beautiful souls profess their love for one another.  May we all find our one true love.

2. Gabby Giffords – This story is truly inspirational.  It’s more than a story about a woman who was shot, but about determination, resolve, and love.  She beat all odds by surviving an awful event with her loving husband on her side.  I applaud Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.

3. Off the Mat Occupies Wall Street – We’ve all heard about the Occupy Protests and seen the videos of the struggle and violence.  But Off the Mat Into the World (including founder Seane Corn and various yogis) takes a different approach to the protests by promoting love, unity and justice for all.  Let us stand in peace and love for all!

4. Make love not war photo – It was the photograph shown around the world.  An image of a young man kissing a young woman in the streets of Vancouver after a riot broke out.  The poignant picture reminds us that love and humanity prevails.  This is my favorite image in 2011.

5. Lauren Scruggs – This young woman lost her eye and her left hand in a freak accident.  But what amazes me is her spirit.  She is determined not to let her accident stop her.

Highlights in my life:

1. Having the strength and courage to choose a different path for my life – It’s not easy leave what is comfortable.  In 2011, I left my corporate job because it wasn’t fulfilling.  I’m grateful for the strength and courage to do this.  I’m grateful for my family’s support.

2. Completing my 200 hour yoga teacher training – I completed my training after practicing for 4 years.  Now I’m so honored to be teaching yoga at Seventh Chakra Yoga.  Yoga has changed my life and I’m immensely grateful for it being a part of my life.

3. Raising money for Nepal Orphans Home – In 2010, I went to Nepal and met the wonderful kids ofNepal Orphans Home.  I’m so blessed to have met these kids.  My friends and I raised roughly $12,000 for these kids at our fundraiser in May.  For my 30th birthday, I also asked friends to donate to the cause.  If you are interested in donating money for my 30th birthday, please click here.

4. Launching {the JOY depot} – This website is my passion and it became a reality.  Thanks to everyone who reads articles on this website!

5. Zip lining in Alaska –  I went on a family vacation to Alaska and got to go zip lining!  I love the feeling of flying and zipping above the treetops was amazing!  I’m so grateful for the experience!

Now that you’ve seen my list, what is your favorite moments of 2011?
