5 ways to give yourself LOVE!

Giving ourselves LOVE is one of the most important tools we have.  

Growing up, I always thought that self love = being “self absorbed”, “cocky”, “vain”, etc.  Part of the reason was because I was taught to be humble and respectful of others.  To me, this meant I didn’t boost about myself accomplishments to others.

But the last few years, I’ve come to realize that people who really love themselves were right in some ways.

A few months ago, I wrote about the power of our words. Our bodies, our cells pick up on the positive and negative vibrations that surround us, especially what we say.

When we say something negative, our bodies react one way.  Likewise, when we say something positive, our bodies react in a whole different way.

Self love is no different.

When we love ourselves, we can give love to others.  We have start to believe we have the confidence to do anything.

I spent many years in my life feeling “not good enough” and beating myself up for all the mistakes I made or the silly things I’d say.  I was a perfectionist and anything short of perfection was ammunition my mind could use to put myself down.

You might be wondering why I did this.  For one it wasn’t something I consciously thought about.  It was the way I reacted to situations.  We are our worst critics.

Years of negative thoughts geared towards myself took a toll on me.  My self confidence was so low.

The chatter in my head never seems to stop.

But finally I learned the tools and techniques to honor and love myself first and for most.

Here are 5 ways to give yourself the LOVE you deserve: 

1. Write down 15 things you love about yourself – This was one of the hardest things for me to do in the beginning.   But we must practice appreciating ourselves and figuring out things we love about ourselves.  It can be anything.  Our smiles, our hearts, our intelligence.  Start with the words “I love my…”.  Keep the list handy.  Maybe even post these words up on an inspiration board.

2. Say daily self affirmations to yourself in front of a mirror – First think of a few words or phrases that inspire you.  It can be from the list of 15 in step 1.  To give you an example, mine are: Beautiful, kind, and successful.  Then go to a mirror and say “I am {your word}, I am {your word}, I am {your word}” and stare at your left eye while saying your affirmation.  Say it 10 times.  In my case, I say, “I am beautiful, I am kind, I am successful.”

3. Give yourself love notes – Sometimes we need a love note to boost up our spirits.  Why not give one to yourself.  You can write something positive about yourself or even your affirmation or words from your list of 15 on a piece of paper.  Then hide the pieces of paper all over your house.  For the next few weeks, you’ll get to discover the little notes again.  If you want to take it one step further, you can write a love note to yourself (and I mean write a real letter with your name and everything).   Then ask a trustworthy friend to mail the note to you sometime in the future.  Ask him/her to pick a date to mail it to you (preferably not within the next week).  You’ll get a nice surprise in the mail to remind you how great you are!  These notes always seem to be found or delivered  at the right times!

4. Forgive yourself – In life we forgive others, but how often do we forgive ourselves?  Instead of holding on to something you may have done or said or a mistake you made, practice some self forgiveness. Place your hand at your heart and say “I forgive myself for…”

5. Practice meditation – Like the Energizer bunny, our minds keep going and going and going.  But we all need a break from the constant chatter.  Many times, the chatter does us know service.  So take a moment and meditation.  This doesn’t necessarily mean you should just sit down and stop thinking (which is impossible to do). You can go on a walk through nature and notice your surroundings.  Giving your mind something to think about like the beautiful trees or flowers on your walk will help quiet the mind.
